This NEEDS series of meetings was preceded by a workshop with the same title ("Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems") held in Lecce (Italy) in 1979 (reported in: Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems, edited by M. Boiti, F. Pempinelli and G. Soliani, Springer, 1980), which originated then the series of workshops called "Nonlinear Physics. Theory and Experiments", and by one held in Rome in 1977 (reported in: Nonlinear evolution equations solvable by the spectral transform, edited by F. Calogero, Pitman, 1978). Other closely related workshops were held in Como (Italy) in 1988 (reported in: Nonlinear Evolution Equations: Integrability and Spectral Methods, edited by A. Degasperis, A. P. Fordy and M. Lakshmanan, Manchester University Press, 1990), and in Guardamar (Spain) in 1998.
