The NEEDS series of international workshops focussed on Nonlinear Science began in 1980. Originally, it was promoted by a group of physicists from Rome University La Sapienza, lead by Francesco Calogero and by Andonis Verganelakis of the Nuclear Research Center Demokritos in Athens as local organizer. Its main purpose was to foster communication among junior and senior scientists coming from different countries, including the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, China, the Americas, Western Europe, Japan, Canada, Australia,.... Outstanding results obtained in the past decades in the field of nonlinear integrable equations have been announced at NEEDS meetings and some of them have been obtained during the workshops themselves.

From its early stages, the NEEDS workshops have attracted experienced scientists from all over the world as well as junior researchers and PhD students, providing an excellent playground for contacts, discussions and long lasting collaborations. Many of those who attended the NEEDS workshops are nowadays prominent researchers in the field of nonlinear science.

A new NEEDS meeting will take place from June 16th to June 23th 2007 in the small village of L'Ametlla de Mar, near Barcelona (Spain).
